Starting with the medieval mystic Meister Eckhart, the booklet addresses the philosophical adjustments caused via Luther's Reformation, after which provides a close account of the classical age of German philosophy, together with the paintings of Leibniz and Kant; the increase of a brand new type of humanities in Lessing, Hamann, Herder, and Schiller; the early Romantics; and the Idealists Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. the next chapters examine the cave in of the German synthesis in Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Marx, and Nietzsche. Turning to the 20 th century, the booklet explores the increase of analytical philosophy in Frege and the Vienna and Berlin circles; the root of the historic sciences in Neo-Kantianism and Dilthey; Husserl's phenomenology and its radical alteration via Heidegger; the Nazi philosophers Gehlen and Schmitt; and the most West German philosophers, together with Gadamer, Jonas, and people of the 2 Frankfurt faculties. Arguing that there has been a particular German philosophical culture from the mid-eighteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, the ebook closes via analyzing why that culture principally led to the many years after international battle II.

However, his favorite book from the age of German mysticism was the anonymous one he called the Theologia deutsch, also from the fourteenth century, which despite the presence of many an idea of Eckhart’s, Tauler’s, or Seuse’s, is directed primarily against the Brethren and Sisters of the Holy Spirit, defends Christological orthodoxy, and vehemently rejects the subordination of faith to knowledge. In this turn against rationalism in the philosophy of religion, the book is as distant as possible from Eckhart, but it is in accord with Luther.
Trans. 12 Chapter 1 my motive is personal. I was born and grew up in Italy, learned German as a foreign language, and a large part of my youth, in which I benefited from a Lutheran training in religion, was spent enthusiastically appropriating German language, literature, philosophy, and human sciences. Having in the meantime become an American married to a Korean, for more than a decade I have been living and teaching at the leading Catholic university in the United States. My perspective on Germany is no longer an internal one, but rather that of a foreigner who wants to understand two things: what factors helped German philosophy rise to be one of the two most fascinating in human history, and how, despite this philosophical tradition, the moral and political catastrophe of 1933–1945 could happen.
Moreover, it can hardly be claimed that Nicholas had an enduring influence on later German philosophy—Lessing worked on a translation of one of his works, but Hegel did not know even his name. However, Nicholas himself was clearly influenced by Eckhart, whose genius he praised (even if he wanted Eckhart’s works kept away from the general public, thinking them useful only for initiates) when Johannes Wenck reproached him for his proximity to Eckhart and pantheism. Moreover, the originality, the quality, and even the intellectual affinity of his philosophical theology with that of Hegel are so striking that it would be odd to ignore him in a history of German philosophy.
