More commonly and artfully, there will be several simultaneous melodies to follow (polyphony), and these may all be equally important, or they may come into various relations of domination and dependence, as in the classic vocal polyphony of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. If the dependent material does not form continuous lines, or forms them only intermittently, we have a melody with accompaniment (homophony), as in the early modern operatic monody. Much of the textural effort in the most artistically ambitious modern instrumental music from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century went into preserving the distinction between melody and accompaniment, while devising various ways of making the accompaniment melodically distinctive, rather than perfunctory.

The kind we have found to be typical in sculpture, where the work itself may become an abstract real object, or the kind often encountered in painting, where what is abstract may be not the work but the represented imaginary world? Both kinds, I would like to claim, are possible in music, and most commonly they are present simultaneously. To put it briefly, most music is in part representational, but what gets represented in it are abstract objects. To be sure, as in sculpture and painting, in music, it is also possible to create works in which we are asked to hear nothing but what is in fact presented to our ears.

First, I suggested a moment ago that the media can serve not only the aim of self-representation, but also of self-invention. How is that possible? It has been said that a medium allows us to translate an immediate experience into a mediated imprint and the reverse, retranslate the imprint into an experience. Thus the imprint, properly decoded, becomes the source of an imaginary experience, that is, of an experience the object of which is not real (existing in the same space and time as our bodies do), but imagined.
