DUNE, the disbursed and Unified
Numerics setting, is an open-source modular toolbox
for fixing partial differential equations with grid-based tools.
This publication covers fresh advances within the improvement
and utilization of DUNE.
It contains a set of thirteen articles which mostly developed from talks given on the First DUNE consumer assembly in Stuttgart, Germany, 6.-8.10.2010.
The articles properly illustrate the complicated services and the powerful versatility of the DUNE framework. the 1st half offers extensions of the DUNE middle modules, together with the development of neighborhood finite aspect areas, a discretization toolbox, and meta-grids,
as good as a dialogue of functionality pitfalls. the second one half introduces numerous exterior DUNE modules facing, e.g., decreased foundation equipment, unfitted discontinuous Galerkin tools, optimum keep watch over difficulties, and porous media purposes.
Specific tools and functions are topic of the 3rd half,
ranging from two-phase movement in porous media over the implementation of hybrid discontinuous Galerkin and heterogeneous multi-scale equipment as much as the coupling of DUNE with an latest finite aspect package.

Additional element iterators are available extending the usual D UNE grid interface: column-wise, layer-wise, from lower to upper elements, and vice versa. This paper is organized as follows: In Section 2 we give a short introduction to the D UNE -G RID framework. We describe the construction of prismatic cells and the prismatic grid. In Section 3 we give details on the usage and implementation of D UNE -P RISM G RID and an overview of additional features. In Section 4 we compare the performance of the implementation with other D UNE grid and meta grid implementations and show a more complex application using D UNE -P RISM G RID.

As we see, depending on the grid implementation, the first code snippet requires an extra 50 % up to almost 300 % of CPU time in comparison to the second one. Finally, let us have a look at the parallel grid interface. D UNE provides two id sets, a local and a global one, to uniquely identify an entity (see [2]). Since these id sets are artificial D UNE structures, a grid implementation might have to store them as data associated with the grid’s native entity representation. Due to its less restrictive nature, a local id might be more readily available to the grid implementation than the global one.

L − 1. The domain occupied by the prismatic cell is given by dom(pe,i ) = e × [αi , αi+1 ] = { (x, xd+1 ) | x ∈ e, xd+1 ∈ [αi−1 , αi ] } ⊂ Rw+1 . The subentities in pe,i are chosen in such a way, that the reference element R(pe,i ) corresponding to the prismatic cell is R(pe,i ) = R(e)| , where R(e) denotes the reference element for e. By definition, top and bottom surface of the convex polytope pe,i are “flat”. Subentities parallel to the the newly added spatial direction are called “non-flat”.
